How to express Yarn Count in Textiles?
In the textile industry, yarn count is used to indicate the thickness of the yarn. There are several calculation methods, and different expressions are suitable for various fibers and regions. Here are some common methods:
1. English Count (Ne or S)đ§ĩ
- Also known as "metric count" or "English count," it is widely used in China, Europe, and some textile-producing countries.
- Definition: It is calculated based on the length of yarn per pound. For example, 1 count means 1 pound of yarn is 840 yards (about 768 meters) in length
- Formula: Ne = 840 yards / yarn weight (pounds)
- Application: Generally used for cotton and similar fibers, such as Ne40 cotton yarn. The higher the count, the finer the yarn.
2. Metric Count (Nm)đĻ
- Commonly used for wool and linen fibers, and in some parts of Europe.
- Definition: Indicates the length in meters per gram of yarn. For example, 1 Nm means 1 gram of yarn is 1 meter in length.
- Formula: Nm = yarn length (meters) / weight (grams)
- Application: More commonly seen in wool and linen yarns. Higher count indicates finer yarn, such as Nm30 being finer than Nm20.
3. Denier (D)đĒĸ
- Mainly used for synthetic fibers like nylon and polyester.
- Definition: Indicates the weight in grams of 9,000 meters of fiber. For example, 1 D means 9,000 meters of fiber weighs 1 gram.
- Formula: Denier = yarn weight (grams) / 9,000 meters
- Application: Higher denier numbers mean thicker fiber, e.g., 40D nylon is thicker than 20D nylon.
4. Texđ§ļ
- Tex is an internationally accepted unit and is widely applied across various fiber types.
- Definition: Indicates the weight in grams of 1,000 meters of yarn. For example, 1 Tex means 1,000 meters of yarn weighs 1 gram.
- Formula: Tex = yarn weight (grams) / 1,000 meters
- Application: The thicker the yarn, the higher the Tex value. For example, 20 Tex is thicker than 10 Tex.
5. Decitex (dtex)
- Commonly used for synthetic fibers, such as polyester and nylon.
- Definition: Indicates the weight in grams of 10,000 meters of yarn.
- Formula: dtex = yarn weight (grams) / 10,000 meters
- Application: Higher dtex values indicate thicker yarn, e.g., 100 dtex is thicker than 50 dtex.
Usage of Different Yarn Counts đ
- Cotton Yarn: Typically uses the English count (Ne).
- Wool: More commonly uses the metric count (Nm).
- Synthetic Fibers: Denier (D) and decitex (dtex) are often used.
- General Use: Tex, as an international unit, is recommended for standardization and is suitable for a variety of fibers.
